An off-duty Milwaukee police officer was shot when he tried to stopped an armed robbery Thursday.
The incident happened in the city's Historic Third Ward area after a failed carjacking attempt, WITI-TV reports. When the car's driver went into a nearby business, the suspect confronted her again and tried to rob her.
That's when a 37-year-old off-duty police detective stepped in and tried to detain the suspect. The two began to scuffle, and the suspect opened fire.
Multiple shots struck the officer, who then returned fire. The suspect fled the scene, but he wasn't struck in the exchange.
The detective, who has been with the department for seven years, suffered life-threatening injuries. He's in stable condition.
"Again, I want to remind everyone, this was an off-duty detective, probably just ordering food," Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said. "He went into danger without even hesitation. Absolutely proud of the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department; proud that we are able to be professional on and off duty."
Police eventually apprehended an 18-year-old man and 17-year-old boy in connection with the shooting. Charges are pending.
